A Man's Best Friend - Puppy Obedience Training

!±8± A Man's Best Friend - Puppy Obedience Training

One of the most exhilarating things that will ever happen to you is bringing a puppy home. It's like expanding your family. Despite that, it will take some effort to make your little doggy listen to you.

Despite being considered easier than house training a mature dog, house training a puppy requires you to keep a couple of things in mind before you begin to train your doggy to be obedient.

Traditionally, one uses, among other things, a leash or collar along with some manipulation to teach the puppy fundamental orders. The downside is that this way can be quite severe even harming fragile breeds of puppy. With a puppy such as a German Shepherd or a Bulldog, who aren't as delicate, you might consider trying this approach. However, should you have opted for a Poodle or a Chihuahua, using a less strict method, e.g rewarding the animal or giving it its favorite food, whenever it is obedient, while denying it whenever it is not, might be a better idea?

You might also force him to stay in a kennel whenever he's obstinate.

If training the puppy with rewards is doomed for failure, it could be that you have to resort to being somewhat strict and go for the leash or collar method. A very common approach to the collar method is having the dog sport an electronic collar around his or her neck, while brandishing a remote control in their own hand. In case of disobedience by the dog, you shall press the button, causing the collar to discharge a low-intensity shock. As these shocks do not have a high intensity, they do not cause any pain, but they will be dislike by the dog and in the end also evoke obedience.

Despite that, the best communication method for you and your canine pal is finding a common language. Say words like yes, no, good boy bravo...etc. to make your sentiments known to him.

This could require both patience on your part and a good deal of time at first, but the bond between the two of you that will come out of this will last forever.

Having trained a stubborn dog, you have earned the title of expert in dog obedience training.

How to Get Your Pit Bull Started in the Sport of Weight Pull

!±8± How to Get Your Pit Bull Started in the Sport of Weight Pull

Weight pull is a wonderful sport for Pit Bulls to display their physical and mental strength. Before you get
involved you should make sure you know where to go, what equipment you will need and the training involved.

Let's start with Weight Pull Organizations

Two established organizations that hold weight pull events are the United Kennel Club and the International Weight Pull Association.

Both organizations offer quality events and have the experience to set up nice pulls with good turn outs. The IWPA is a weight pull specific organization and is widely popular among dog owners who are involved in weight pull.

The types of pulls you will encounter are:

1. Track pulls. These pulls use a track and wheel system. This
is where you will see massive amounts of weight being pulled.

2. Cart pull. These pulls use a wheeled cart and while the
weights are lower than track pulls they are still quite impressive.

3. Sled pulls. The most difficult of the pulls are sled pulls.

These pulls are held on dirt or snow and use a sled to hold
the weights.

The UKC and IWPA mostly use cart and sled pulls during their pull events. This requires your dog to have Superior strength and drive in order to successfully pull the weight.

How Weight Pulls Work

Your dog will be required to pull the weight 16 feet and you are not allowed to bait (encourage with food or a toy) or touch the dog while the dog is pulling.

You can encourage the dog from the finish line or drive the dog by walking to the side and behind them while encouraging them to pull the weight.

Your dog has one minute to complete the pull. If they do not pull the weight helpers will come out and assist the dog so they succeed. You do not score any points if the dog needs help.

The dog that pulls the most weight according to their size wins the pull.

Using this system you will see big dogs lose to little dogs because the little dog pulled more weight compared to their size in open pulls. Both organizations offer pulls for specific breeds.

The most popular breeds used are:

1. American Pit Bull Terriers

2. American Bulldogs

3. Malamutes

4. Rottweilers

But other breeds like Cocker Spaniels and Poodles also get involved in weight pull.

Important Equipment You Will Need

Having a good weight pull harness is the key here. Weight pull harnesses are designed for weight pull and come with a "brace" bar that will help stretch out the harness to pull the weight.

You can get these harnesses online by doing a search for them using your favorite search engine.

Training Your Pit Bull for Weight Pull

Experts advise against getting young dogs started in weight pull and recommend you start when the dog is 18-24 months
old.

Starting at this age gives your dog time to fully grow so they won't injure their joints, muscles or ligaments.

You will find two camps in the training department. One camp suggests that you start out by having your dog pull light weights while working and the other camp suggests that you start training with light weights using the rules, distance and set up that you would encounter at a pull.

Having your dog pull the light weight 16 feet exactly as they would if they were compete ting.

Whatever camp you want to start in you should get some professional help or find a person who has been doing weight pull with the UKC or the IWPA for a while and ask them questions.

Weight pull offers a great way to get outdoors and get some exercise with your dog while giving your
dog a job to do.

In the end, it's a unique sport for unique canines and owners that enjoy the competition and excitement
of a successful pull.

Radio Fence Dog Protection Made Simple

!±8± Radio Fence Dog Protection Made Simple

Forget messy wires underground or eyesore wires strewn over rocks and bushes. "No, Toto, this is not Kansas" but it is the new Wizard of Oz in terms of high tech simple-to-install radio fence pet containment systems.

Plug-And-Play Simple Installation. The latest breed of radio fence pet containment systems may not be an FDR "fireside chat" radio broadcast to teach a nation, but the radio dog fence does quickly train, and then re-enforce the idea of home and boundaries for your furry family member. The radio pet fencing system boils down to three (3) components:-

* Component 1 - Plug-in Transmitter. A standard grounded 3-pin transmitter unit is the Mother load "controller" unit that defines the signal type.....signal strength and the overall spherical shaped "invisible dog fencing" area. Depending on the size of your property, or the areas that you've ear-marked for your dog, the radio dog fence transmitter unit can produce a 30 ft. to 150+ ft. diameter "play" area.

* Component 2 - Collar "Receiver". Toto, Daisy, Jak or Lassie get to wear a lightweight, weather proof, battery energized radio dog fence receiver collar unit. After a short training phase where you and your dog walk the new wireless do fence "boundary zone", marked by tiny flags as a visual "prompt", your dog will rapidly "get it". The radio pet fence receiver adapts to your needs, and to Toto's training, with up to 6 varying strength settings. Training is all about "wee little beeps" produced by the receiver unit, which Toto hears. As she approaches the "boundary-do not pass" zone, the beeps increase until around the 6 ft.-from-boundary mark, she'll receive a tiny corrective electrical shock. The corrective shock doesn't hurt, nor cause any pain or bodily harm, rather acts more to startle and remind Toto where the boundary is.

* Component 3 - Your Doggie. Where would a radio fence pet containment system be without dogs and owners? Simple as the training sounds, radio dog fence set ups are not the same for every breed of dog. Motley mixed breeds and many designer breeds respond quickly to their newly defined wireless pet fence world. However...and this is a big "yes, but" proviso...the bloodhounds and beagles may be genetically over-enhanced in terms of nose-and-smell. Result? Once a beagle "gets a whiff", he's off and may simply crash through the radio dog fence "shock zone"...leaving behind a sharp yelp, but continuing on his mad dash scent-chasing run. The stubborn dog radio fence quandary offers the other category of potentially unsuited breeds for a wireless dog fencing set-up.

Traveling, Flexibility With Your Portable Wireless Dog Fence. No need to leave your dog at home again. Traveling with your RV or van means that you can plug your radio dog fence transmitter unit directly into the lighter outlet. Adjust the signal-radius to a zone around your camp site. You can rest, confident that your dog will move about within the safety zone that she's familiar with back at home.

Midget Dogs And Radio Fence Pet Containment Systems. As cool and performance-oriented as the latest generation of wireless dog fencing systems have become, the sheer size of the collar, and the strength of the corrective "shock" is not right for dogs under 10 lbs. body weight. For these diminutive pooches, wired underground dog fencing will be the better pet containment solution.
